Fun FAre

Beginning in January 2008, Health Education Council will be partnering with Sacramento Head Start, Soil Born Farms, and Bill Maynard of the Sacramento Area Community Garden Coalition to develop and implement the FUN FAre program.

The goal of the program is reduce childhood obesity and overweight among 0-5 year olds.  We will do this by:

Training Preschool Teachers

Health Education Council staff in partnership with Head Start staff will develop a fun, interactive nutrition education curriculum for Head Start and other preschool settings, then we will train Head Start teachers in implementing the curriculum and promoting healthy eating and physical activity in the preschool classroom.

Parent Education

Health Education Council will develop a series of parent education classes that will teach parents in an interactive setting the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity for the entire family.  Classes will be taught during Head Start parent education sessions.

Small Garden Kits

Health Education Council will develop small garden kits for preschool settings.  Two types of kits will be available: wheelbarrow kits that will allow gardening in small facilities with limited out door space and raised bed kits for larger outdoor spaces.  The kits will include all materials and supplies for fun, interactive garden lessons.  Bill Maynard, a Master Gardener and founder of the Sacramento Area Community Garden Coalition will provide trainings, materials and support for those preschools that want to use the kits.

Preschool Farm Stands

Soil Born Farms will work with Health Education Council and Head Start to develop and implement farm stands at up to 15 Head Start sites in Sacramento County.  Farm stands will provide parents an opportunity to purchase fresh, affordable, culturally appropriate produce while dropping off or picking up their children at preschool, saving them time and money.  Produce for the farm stands will be grown by Soil Born Farms and other local growers.

The FUN FAre program is funded by the First 5 Sacramento Commission that supoorts the health and education of children ages zero to five ans their families in Sacramento County through a tobacco tax known as Proposition 10.
