NNTPP Initiatives
The Salvation Army:
With the assistance of the NNTPP, The Salvation Army has provided training for staff at the Army's corps
community centers to integrate tobacco cessation as part of their addiction treatment programs. The Salvation
Army has also adopted facility tobacco use policies.
-
The Salvation Army "Tobacco and Health" Scouting Emblem Program NNTPP collaborates with The
Salvation Army to develop a "Tobacco and Health" scouting emblem curriculum for the Army's after school
and youth development programs. The curriculum focuses on boys and girls in grades 5-8 and incorporates
health education, media literacy and advocacy. The Salvation Army will train youth leaders to facilitate
the program and will track the number of corps community centers implementing the program as well as the
number of youth served.
National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC):
The NCCHC and NNTPP collaborated on the production of Tobacco Cessation for Correctional Populations: A Health Education
Manual, which is designed to both educate individuals on the health effects of tobacco use and help them quit. Together,
the NNTPP and NCCHC have sold over 300 manuals nationwide to correctional facilities, nonprofit organizations, private entities,
and public health and educational institutions. The development of this manual also strengthened legislation that eventually
led to the banning of tobacco use in California state prisons in 2005.

Research
The NNTPP has conducted two case studies and one focus group study together with other stakeholders:
-
Integrating Tobacco Control into The Salvation Armys Substance Abuse Training Curriculum, authored
by The Salvation Army and NNTPP, details the process of assessing the readiness of The Salvation Army
facilities to incorporate treatment for nicotine addiction into their alcohol and other drug treatment
programs. This case study can serve as a template for other organizations that are interested in introducing
a tobacco control component to their work.
The Salvation Army is now conducting a survey among their addiction treatment programs in the Western Territories in
order to evaluate the level of tobacco cessation services currently offered at these sites, conduct a needs assessment
for quality improvement of these services, and gather baseline data for formulating a Territorial Tobacco Control
Strategy.
-
Tobacco Policy, Cessation, and Education in Correctional Facilities, authored by the NCCHC and the
NNTPP, describes a pilot initiative designed to study strategies to promote tobacco use policy, education, and
cessation within correctional facilities. This case study also highlights useful approaches for organizations
interested in similar issues.
-
Smoking Habits and Prevention Strategies in Low Socioeconomic Status Populations, a focus group study
conducted by the West Virginia University Prevention Research Center and the NNTPP, had the following objectives:
1) review the social and cultural nuances that support/encourage smoking in low SES populations
2) identify communications channels most effective in reaching this population with tobacco/cessation messages
3) tailor prevention messages to reach low SES adults.
All three reports can be downloaded here:
Also, reports can be ordered free of charge from the HEC bookstore.
Association of Gospel Rescue Missions (AGRM):
The AGRM adapted Tobacco Cessation for Correctional Populations: A Health Education Manual and has been using it
in the missions as a cessation component of its programs to assist the homeless, substance abusers, and those in
job training programs. NNTPP has conducted several trainings on the use of this curriculum in the mission setting
at various AGRM conferences and workshops.
National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH):
With technical assistance from the NNTPP, the NCH is conducting a survey of homeless shelters in the Washington, D.C.
area to assess their smoking policies and the perceptions of staff and clients of tobacco issues.
Public Health Seattle King County:
King County has been piloting a tool for supporting cessation in agencies serving the homeless, mentally ill, and
chemically dependent. They are also starting to pilot the work in low income and transitional housing. NNTPP will
assist Public Health Seattle King County in the dissemination of these tools when they are complete.
Rural Alaska Community Action Program, Inc (RurAL CAP):
RurAL CAP has adapted Tobacco Cessation for Correctional Populations: A Health Education Manual for the Alaskan
communities they serve. This adapted version, Tobacco Education & Cessation for Rural Alaskans: A Health Education
Manual, is used by AmeriCorps members and facilitators for presentations Statewide.
